Greeting from the Director of the Graduate Institute of Musicology

Dear participants of the 2016 NTU-CUHK-EARS Forum: It is my special pleasure to welcome all of you to Taipei for this year’s Joint International Forum on the theme of Music and Mobility, hosted by National Taiwan University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Tokyo, and Seoul National University. Our event combines two of the most lively academic gatherings of recent years for graduate students in musicology: the biennial joint forum hosted by the music departments of National Taiwan University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the annual East Asian Research Seminar (EARS) for Graduate Students in Musicology jointly hosted by the University of Tokyo and Seoul National University. Bringing together the faculty and students of these four outstanding East Asian institutions is sure to make for a most stimulating and lively three days of lectures, roundtables, and discussions. We are also exceptionally honored that Professor Kay Kaufman Shelemay of Harvard University will be with us to deliver a keynote address on the forum’s theme. In this transnational yet Asian event, we are sure to encounter a fine demonstration of the vitality of musicological research in this region of the world, characterized both by strong local identities and by a passion for active international dialogues. Let me take an opportunity to express my thanks to all staff members, students, and faculty who have generously contributed their efforts to organizing this forum, and who have played an indispensable role in making our event a success.

Jen-yen Chen,
Director Graduate Institute of Musicology
